SPECTACULAR & rare hand painted skirt, vintage from the 50s by Maya de Mexico. This piece is unbelievable, vibrant aqua blue with gold & bronze painted panels of Mayan deities & hieroglyphs! I took close ups, but there are 11 completely different panels before they repeat! There's a figure who is apparently Kukulkan, the god of wind, storms, life, knowledge, and agriculture, and a creator god associated with the cycles of life &death. I've found a monkey-like figure, a serpent, & all manner of figures I can't even identify.
This skirt is a true work of art, especially considering "Maya de Mexico" items were handmade by indigenous local women.
