- Vintage copy, subtitled "A Novel for Young and Old"
- Frontispiece, which is a color map of Boston, is by Lyn Ward
- Set in Boston before the Revolutionary War, this is a work of historical fiction, about a young boy, Johnny, at first a talented silversmith's apprentice, then turned newspaper delivery man due to a horrific hand injury in the shop, which made him unable to work there. Meanwhile, tensions persist between the Patriots (those against British control) and Loyalists (those siding with Great Britain), paralleling his own life, with trials and tribulations due to Johnny's hand injury
- You'll have to read it to really get into the complexity of Johnny's character. Dubbed a children's book, but read by more adults!
- Newbery (Children's) award winner
- 256 pgs.; Copyright 1943; Published Houghton Mifflin Company
- Black and white illustrations at the beginning of each chapter
- Tan hardbound has some wear on the spine, specifically fraying at the edges. There is some staining to the cover, and little spots also appear on the interior pages, however, binding is tight, and surprisingly, the pages are thick and in good shape for their age
