1938 Websters Collegiate Dictionary

This rare 1938 dictionary has its original covers, spine and all 1275 pages, including 4 extra protective pages in the front and back. the compact for its time, dictionary weighs just 5 lb and measures 10" x 7" x 3" thick. Some of the entries are quite unique. Even more interesting are the missing words that had not been invented yet, like computer! the very last page of the dictionary is dedicated to printed testimonials from prominent Americans, or what we would call recommendations today. one of those is included in this posting. George kittredge was a professor of English at Harvard University, and lived from 1860 to 1941. his testimonial was printed in this edition just 3 years before his death. A copy like this makes an extremely unique and personal gift and of course a unique reference item. As printed dictionaries become defunct, it will always be powerful and valuable to find such well-written definitions reflecting the time and tone of nearly 100 years ago!
