This is an original 1938 Mexican ex-voto retablo – a hand-painted devotional folk art piece created to give thanks for a miraculous event.
Painted on tin, this piece tells the story of a man who was injured when his horses became spooked and dragged him. In desperation, he prayed to a holy figure (possibly El Señor de Chalma or a local saint), and miraculously survived. He later commissioned or painted this ex-voto as an expression of gratitude.
The artwork features two horses, the injured man kneeling in prayer, and a religious figure represented on a crucifix. The lower portion includes a handwritten Spanish inscription dated February 21, 1938, detailing the event.
This piece shows visible signs of age, with patina, edge wear, and paint loss consistent with its age and history. These imperfections add to the charm and authenticity of vintage devotional art.
A beautiful example of traditional Mexican religious folk art, perfect for collectors of ex-votos, retablos, or unique cultural artifacts.
