This vintage mug commemorates the short reign of King Edward VIII, who famously abdicated the British throne in 1936. A highly collectible piece of royal memorabilia from a pivotal moment in British history. These are scarcer than George VI or Elizabeth II mugs due to the short reign. Produced by Soho Pottery Ltd in their Solian Ware line under the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation, this ceramic mug features a regal portrait of Edward VIII, framed by the royal motto “Dieu et mon droit” and “Honi soit qui mal y pense.” 🏰 “Dieu et mon droit” Translation: “God and my right” Meaning: This is the motto of the British monarch. It signifies the divine right of the king or queen to govern, asserting that their authority comes from God. “Honi soit qui mal y pense”Translation: “Shame on him who thinks evil of it” Meaning: This is the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in Britain. It implies a defense of honor or noble intent—basically, “if you think poorly of this, the shame is on you.” Both mottos are steeped in medieval tradition and are still used today in British heraldry and on royal coats of arms. Year: 1937 (pre-abdication coronation issue), Approx. 4 inches, Excellent vintage condition with some fine age-related crazing and one tiny chip on rim. Sold as is.
