1920 Irish Independence, Assassination Attempt of Sir Jon French, Vintage Newspaper History and Artwork, Original History Memorabilia, History Gifts, Retro Artwork and Gifts for Men, Vintage Advertisements
Condition: The newspaper is in Average condition with edge fraying and the pages are looseleaf. This newspaper is incredibly fragile as well, given the type of paper they had to use to produce pictures on the paper (mostly woodpulp).
Description: This newspaper pictorial section covered the recent escalation in Irish Independence where Sir John French was traveling in his motorcade in Phoenix Park, Dublin, a group of Irish Republican Army (IRA) members carried out an assassination attempt. The attackers opened fire on the convoy with automatic weapons, aiming to kill Sir John French and other high-ranking British officials.
Fortunately, the attack was unsuccessful in its primary objective of assassinating Sir John French. Although several people were injured, including Sir Henry Wilson, an advisor to French, the Lord Lieutenant himself escaped unharmed. The attack highlighted the volatile atmosphere and escalating violence in Ireland during that time.
