1918 World War I — French Shot Down German Observation Balloon
German observation balloons in WWI, called "Drachen" or "Drachenballons", were hydrogen-filled, tethered gasbags used to observe enemy movements, direct artillery fire, and act as a stable platform above the battlefield. These balloons, particularly the advanced Parseval-Siegsfeld type, replaced older spherical designs with a more stable, kite-like form. Equipped with telephones, observers in wicker baskets would relay intelligence to ground command, while the balloons themselves were protected by anti-aircraft guns and escorted by fighter planes.
