1776-1976-D Bicentennial Quarter Clipped Planchet

This 1976 Denver minted quarter was struck on a incomplete or clipped planchet. Approximately 3% of the metal was removed from the planchet before the coin was struck. The coin also displays a phenomena called a Blakesley Effect on the rim opposite the clip. The Blakesley Effect is a slight distortion of the rim caused by movement of the coin in the striking chamber. It is seen on almost every clipped mint error coin. The 1976 quarter was designed to honor the 200th anniversary of the USA.
