The metal was actually not brass. When I polished it with brasso, the tarnished gold color came off and it was silver underneath. Based on my initial comment above, the seller researched vintage metals to find out more. I was so impressed with the follow-through and the offer to correct the matter. Despite the offer, I chose to keep the candlesticks because they truly are beautiful, whether they were pot metal or brass
