The 55th Infantry Regiment was constituted on May 15, 1917, in the Regular Army and organized on June 16, 1917, at Chickamauga Park, Georgia, from personnel of the 17th Infantry. It was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division on November 16, 1917. The regiment was inactivated on September 22, 1921, at Camp Meade, Maryland, and disbanded on July 31, 1922, with personnel concurrently transferred to the 34th Infantry Regiment
