I live with smokers, and occasionally smoke myself. I TRY MY BEST to hand wash each item (other than shoes and NWT items) prior to shipping. However, if you're going to pitch a fit over lingering cigarette odor, please just don't buy from me. I dont have a washing machine, and I'm not dragging one item at a time to a laundromat when I make a sale. If you don't live in an apartment, I'm guessing you have a washing machine. I suggest, if your purchase has lingering odor, you pop it in your machine

velocivixen I hand wash and air dry items before shipping, However, we can understand that if smokers are smoking nearby where I'm air drying things...it won't be completely effective.

velocivixen I urge all buyers to READ my bio, notice the FIVE posts about smoking that scatter my closet. . and decide if you can rewash an item when you get it. It's probably worth it to just TRY to rewash it yourself. I even wash items I buy from a store before I wear them. Just because I don't know who or what may have touched the clothes before me.
Jul 09Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen I will not accept returns based on the claim of "smells of cigarettes". You'll have to fight for that, and ask yourself if it's worth it. Is it worth the opening a case, shipping back an item you wanted etc.. all because you wouldn't wash it again yourself?
Jul 09Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen There are items on here I cannot wash. A fur jacket. Shoes. Dry clean only items. Bags. Beaded gowns. Anything NWT I will leave up to you, the buyer. Do you want me to remove the tags, hand wash it, and ship it to you with the tags in the package? Or just leave it as is and you can wash it as you see fit? You pick.

velocivixen Also, things like tissue paper, mailing packages, cardboard, thank you cards etc. Have all been stored in my home. They will likely smell as my home does. Good news is, those things can be thrown away! Yippie! But complaining about packaging smelling like smoke... That's ridiculous. Just unwrap it and throw it out. Ffs.

kingboutiqueus 👍 love the honesty! I have the opposite problem, i disinfect everything too much. Few times people complained about those smells too🙂 so... 😉
Jul 11Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @kingboutiqueus the thing is, it's an easily solved problem! Once someone receives an item, if they don't like the smell, they have the option to just put it in the wash! I don't have access to a washer and dryer, bc hey NYC apartment, but I believe most buyers on here probably do. So I'm always like, "do you not understand how to use the machine?"

kingboutiqueus
kingboutiqueus @velocivixen yeah, i remember those days...
Jul 11Reply
kingboutiqueus
kingboutiqueus @velocivixen dont worry, even if you write in caps “might smell of smoke” you probably still receive two stars and a comment “i wish she would mention that there is smoke” 😂 i just loved that post. Nyc is awesome, and you have cool stuff!
Jul 11Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @kingboutiqueus the fact that so many people just don't read at all is staggering. I've even written personal messages to buyers that put bundles together, asking them what they want me to do, and I'll either get no response, or I'll get an "oh it's fine" then they open a case against me after they get their stuff. Usually it's the people that haggled the MOST over the prices or wanted a huge discount. Ugh. Just the worst type of buyers.

xandria_d u hv a awesome closet! I would buy from u ;) I smoke myself but hv not encountered that yet ,hope to not cuz even if u smoke outside that stuff gets on everything n the none smokers can smell it a mile away lol believe me I live with one lol 😂
Apr 26Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @xandria_d i try so hard to make sure I've done everything possible so my sales don't smell. I occasionally smoke but I live in an NYC apartment with 3 smokers. we all smoke inside. so even if the clothing itself has been washed, the tissue paper, box, etc might have an odor. but I've run into some incredibly nasty buyers who will literally open a case over "smells of cigarettes " rather than just... you know ..discarding the wrapping and rewashing their item. sigh.

shea_monieux
shea_monieux I had someone comment that they wished they had known I had pets. Did they think I borrowed someone else's dog for my profile pic? Unfortunately, static electricity makes packing tape a magnet. I always have doggie hairs stuck to the tape on the label. :D Next time send them a message that says "EWWW! You don't wash your second hand clothes before wearing them?! Grosss! hahaha

velocivixen @shea_monieux ive always wondered how people don't wash clothes when they buy them. i wash things i bought at the store! you don't know who rubbed it all over their body. its really an easy fix. lol

kimsikorski
kimsikorski some people are just douchebags that can't find happiness unless they're bitching & moaning & telling the world about their multiple allergies or other medical maladies that infringe on your right to live. These snowfakes would do best to go buy their shit at the mall where they can complain to some poor salesperson face to face. I don't smoke but if something comes to me that smells like smoke, no big f'ing deal..i throw it in the washer. Actually i do that with everything i buy 2nd hand.
Jul 15Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @kimsikorski thats what I dint understand the most. i wash things I've bought straight from a store before I wear them. putting used clothing on my body without washing it first seems so wrong to me. its not that hard to wash it yourself.
Jul 16Reply
kimsikorski
kimsikorski @velocivixen yep...i swear some ppl aren't happy unless they're miserable and making someone else that way, too. i watched a broad throw a royal tantrum at Walmart yesterday, she refused to wear a mask so she sat her ass right where you have to walk to get in, preventing other ppl from entering the store. Cops were called & everyone paid attention to her and she looked so pleased with herself. Those kind of ppl should all be sent to live on a-hole island, along with smoking whiners.
Jul 16Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @kimsikorski seriously, Americans are giant toddlers whining about being mildly inconvenienced by having to wear a mask. almost every other country has covid nearly beat. I believe its bc the care of the collective over the individual is much higher than here x where things are "all about my comfort and my wants". like, sorry Karen, but some people have war in their country. so sorry you have to wear a mask in public so we have a chance of surviving a pandemic.

shopkiger
shopkiger @kingboutiqueus @velocivixen I also mention that I live with a smoker & wash with scented laundry products. I still get low ratings saying the item had a cigarette odor or they say the item should have been washed with unscented detergent because of their allergies. Not to be rude but I think if someone has allergies that bad they probably shouldn't be buying preowned clothing online. Or perhaps read the description. I'm not going to take laundering requests from each buyer. Lol

kingboutiqueus
kingboutiqueus @fashionflips @velocivixen nobody smokes in my house. but people are funny to find a reason for return. here are my smell stories: one person claimed that my things smell like "dirty chinese restaurant" based on my last name "kin" (which is kinda sorta rascist...) mind you, i don't even know how to cook chinese, although sure as hell i would love to know how. another claimed that even her postman commented that my package smelled of cigarettes (i would change an address if my postman would smell
Sep 09Reply
kingboutiqueus
kingboutiqueus my packages before delivering.) another claimed it smelled of something rotten (also have no idea where they got it from). i think smell is a perfect reason for people to return things because they don't fit or don't like. I had a full description and measurments in description and lady gave me one star "it looks smaller then i imagined".... like WHAT?? i have dimentiones in inches, i have ruler next to the bag.... now i have to meet expectations of your imagination.... :)

shopkiger
shopkiger @kingboutiqueus I've had quite a few cases for smell myself. There's been several buyers who have accused me of spraying the clothing with perfume or febreeze. I don't own either. I don't use febreeze in my home or wear perfume. Even if I did I wouldn't spray it on clothes. Especially when the clothes are washed and I'm honest about having a smoker in my home. I wouldn't waste my time washing all those clothes just to spray them with perfume.

shopkiger
shopkiger @kingboutiqueus Last week I got a message from someone that said "PLEASE STOP WASHING THE CLOTHES IN SCENTED DETERGENT. DONT EVER DO THAT". I can't help but laugh. I would never tell someone how they should care for their items. If they read the description they can decide to buy or not to buy and leave it at that. But of coarse they usually don't. I got a low rating a few days ago that said "Please disclose that you DONT have a smoke free home" I responded "Please read descriptions" lol

velocivixen
velocivixen @fashionflips ugh. people are the worst. I recently had someone buy a dress and claim it wasn't the size listed. ok, I screenshot the pics of the measurements, grabbed the website from the maker, opened their size guide, and screenshot that. sent both to posh as defense in the case. my measurements were exactly those of the correct size according to the makers website. the buyer started leaving "buyer beware" comments all over bc they "lost" the case.
Sep 10Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @fashionflips I eventually put in every listing that I was living with smokers. STILL got messages and low ratings bc "it smells like smoke ". um. did you not read? at the time I had no machine to wash, so I hand washed each item. "smells like smoke ' "smells like febreeze". just can't win. I wash clothes i buy from a store before I wear them. you don't know who else might have tried them on. why is it different here?
Sep 10Reply
shopkiger
shopkiger I've been selling online since 2008 and I've learned the hard way that you can't please every buyer. You can be honest, provide measurements, several photos, ship same day, wash clothing, package carefully, accept offers, give shipping discounts and still buyers are unhappy with something. I try not to let it bother me anymore because I know I'm being honest and doing the best I can and if I make a mistake I'll take responsibility for it. Plus some people are impossible to please no matter what.
Sep 10Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @fashionflips agreed 100%. some people just want something for nothing, or just get a kick out of making trouble. for me its always people that buy a big bundle, get an incredible deal, then nitpick "there was a HAIR on this!" ... i actually had a girl open a case bc i "sent her things she didn't want "aka, id given her several freebies, all things she had "liked", and she complained about that!! you can't win with some people.

caroliiinejones
caroliiinejones I live with a smoker and have been fretting about how to handle selling things online. Your approach seems to fit the way I’d like to manage it. I’m scared about losing money by selling on Posh if fraudulent buyers are going to be nasty about it. If I donate everything, some thrifter will buy it and resell anyway. I can’t decide if it’s still worth it. Appreciate your insights.
Jan 10Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @caroliiinejones honestly, I get the occasional nasty buyer who either didn't read the warnings (ive got them sprinkled throughout my closet, in my bio, AND on listings that I added while living in a smoking house. I wash or hand wash each item before I ship. I air dry them in a non smoking area
Jan 10Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @caroliiinejones (I no longer live at a smoking home). if someone is going to pitch a fit over something so easily fixed, thats on them. theres sufficient warnings on my page and in listings to cover my ***. ;) good luck! I feel being transparent helps a lot.

mrsdrmarten
mrsdrmarten I am so glad to see this. I live with a heavy smoker in a small NYC apartment, we don not have a washer and dryer... like most New Yorkers. I do my best to clean and disinfect, deodorize items. My high dollar items... I always get 5 star ratings on. It’s my cheap buyers. I sold a pair of docs to a kid for $36 that my husband didn’t want. The kid had a fit over the smell. I have also had questionable returns over smell when I think items don’t fit. Smell is a hard thing to prove.
Mar 12Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @mrsdrmarten ITS ALWAYS THE CHEAP BUYERS! omg, nailed it. the more someone negotiates, the higher the likelihood that they're going to open a case against me once they get their stuff. I don't even live in a smoking house anymore but I keep the warning up bc..some things you can't wash.
Mar 12Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @mrsdrmarten even with the warning several times on my page, in 90% of my listings, and in my bio, ill get nasty feedback about "the disgusting smell". idk about you, but I will not put clothing on without washing it first. be it from the mall or secondhand. people act like I sent them used cat litter or the world is ending....like...bruh, 500,000+ died this year in the us. having to wash something is NOT a crisis.

I used to sell for a big name thrift store (pretty sure not just in Oregon, but how would I know too lethargic to Google😂) and knowing it was a charity organization, KNOWING it was from other people, from A THRIFT STORE... people complained, "it smells like a thrift store!" yes. yes it does? cows moo in different dialect depending on where their from! oh we're not just stating random facts? 🤔

rianar
rianar So glad I found you and these comments. I just got a one star rating and complaint about sneakers that ‘smelled so bad of cigarette smoke’ AFTER she accepted the item. She said I should advise buyers of smells. I took that to heart and put a disclaimer in each of my listings to reiterate that I don’t live in hermetically sealed bubble and that my items are not coming from a sterile manufacturer’s setting!…continued in next comment
Sep 16Reply
rianar
rianar My disclaimer is apparently too long to post here, but if you check an item of clothing in my closet it’ll be at the bottom. If anyone has any thoughts about my approach (do I sound angry/aggressive?…lol), I’d love to hear them.

drey805ify
drey805ify At least your honest about it and let ppl know beforehand! I've had ppl try to straight up lie and say "Maybe the postman was smoking in his truck" like really?! The cigarette smoke doesn't bother me if they let it be known but don't try and lie and blame it on the postman! LOL
Nov 03Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @drey805ify preach! most of my posh inventory is at my home where I'm not permitted to smoke inside but I know that smell lingers and can transfer from my clothes onto whatever I'm shipping. I used to put a warning in each listing after I got complaints that they "hadn't seen" the smoking warning but I moved and can't smoke inside anymore. I'd rather be honest about it.
Nov 04Reply
velocivixen

Mar 30Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @nickjoy703 happy to help! I pop up on a Google search? that's cool. I gave up on trying to make everyone happy and just put warnings throughout my closet. I wash everything before shipping it, and if there's a lingering odor it shouldn't be a big deal. it's easy to re wash something yourself. I had too many people open cases bc "it smells of smoke". well, I warned you.

bgorham12 @velocivixen just had this happen to me lol. Said liner was cut out but my description says that and said it smelled like smoke so I should work in cleanliness 😂. My husband smokes I have a 4 bedroom house everything is washed put in ziploc bags and stored in closed tub in my laundry room. Wtf!? And yes it was a buyer who bought and two minutes later was asking when I’m shipping it. I feel disheartened. This was a way for me to stay home w my girls and make some extra money.

allywit1142 @velocivixen I love your thoughts on this issue, as I just recently had a one star review as there was a prior smoker in home and I also sell estate items and don’t have the nose of a Saint Bernard. This person didn’t read my meet posher page that tells all details. I wonder, if some of these complainers have ever stepped foot in a goodwill or thrift store before?….whew…talk about smells…lol
Aug 22Reply
velocivixen
velocivixen @allywit1142 exactly! if I shop at goodwill or any secondhand shop, the first thing I do is wash the items when I get home! it baffles me that people buy online and don't think to wash something if it's got an odor! it's not the end of the world to have to pop something in the wash. I've had people open cases against me for "cigarette odor". wouldn't it be easier to just wash it?
