mcncheese Can you be more specific about how your $ gets to her?

whimsicalbeast
whimsicalbeast @mcncheese every month I make a donation to CI, for her basic sponsorship. And then I do a “special needs” gift. The last few months, because of Covid, the gifts are not allowed to be more than $50… but I have two sponsor children in the program (I don’t have a listing up about Khusi yet) & Kyla, who is in the Philippines, and has started college.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese right now I’m just putting the extra funds aside, (there’s a special account for my sponsor girls) & once things ease up there I will send an EG for education for each child. This will be a lot of money, and I expect it to wipe me out lol omg Because School is pretty much paused across the world, we are all in a holding pattern. Anyway- once I send the funds, then the staff at Children International help the parents navigate the rest.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese All the funds are administered through CI, although the family, of course, makes decisions about how it is spent. In Afifa & Khusi’s case, the staff will pay the schooling fees, book fees, etc for the school. Then the family will be taken on a shopping trip to buy uniforms and school supplies. It’s all so complicated when I try to explain it, but it’s all been done before, many times, by this organization.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese However, this will be the first year for both girls in India, so there will be some decisions to make, for sure. Schooling is tricky, because they are Dalit, so it’s important to find a good fit where the education is good, but they won’t be shunned. Also, a tutor gets sourced for each child & contracted, and I do send extra funds for nutrition, dental care, & vision. In Khusi’s case, especially, it looks like she may have need of an operation on her eye, but nothing is set yet.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese twice a year I also send physical care packages to each child containing a variety of educational things, art supplies, etc... I would dearly love to have more sponsor children than I do, but as you can imagine this all gets pretty pricey. Right now the costs have been especially high because the cost of food in Kolkata has gone up by 6 times!!! What a world. So far this year I have donated $1,215. I know that’s a lot- I hope it helped and I hope I didn’t over-explain!

mcncheese What do you recommend as the best avenue to support this cause?
Sep 16Reply
whimsicalbeast
whimsicalbeast @mcncheese there are so many ways to help. If you want to sponsor a child you can go to children.org and choose that route. My oldest sponsor child is 19 now - I’ve been her sponsor for 15 years! One thing I really like about CI is that we build a relationship over time with letters, and you can visit the children. I have found it to be a richly fulfilling experience.

whimsicalbeast
whimsicalbeast @mcncheese you can also donate directly to Children International, or even directly to a specific child like Afifa :) they have to be in the program already, so you can get the child I.d. Number from a sponsor or choose to help an older teen who’s in the program. Your best bet is to go to the site and look around. It’s amazing (!) how much info is there. I’ve also done a lot of trawling around on youtube, which has been interesting.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese and, of course, you can purchase from one of my closets, and then the funds go to Khusi, Afifa, & Kyla. If you want, go to “kyetaka” on Posh - theres a Post about Kyla :) Someday soon I’ll get the other two up. I just seem to always be behind. Kyla is awesome- shes in school now to be a sports medicine therapist, & Khusi is too cool— she’s such a little art chick!!

whimsicalbeast
whimsicalbeast @mcncheese I hope all of this helps. Thank you for being interested and asking. I don’t get to talk about it often- I don’t want to bore people, but it’s important to me. And I should add- every sponsor is different. If you go into the “myCI” section you’ll see bulletin boards of folks who are invested in this cause. Some have, literally, a dozen sponsor kids! There’s this one man who built a school!
Sep 16Reply
whimsicalbeast
whimsicalbeast @mcncheese but the folks you see active on the site are the ones who are in it to win it, for sure. Most sponsors never write their kids, yet some spam them, some pay for schooling & more, and some just pay the monthly sponsorship bill and that’s it. Some people start with very little children (like I did Kyla, she was 4) & some focus on teens. It’s so individual. The sky is the limit. I encourage you to go to the site & look around. It’s pretty awesome.

whimsicalbeast @mcncheese PS: by “spam” I just meant that they write their sponsor kids a LOT- and that’s not necessarily a bad thing! I love writing them. When Kyla & family would evacuate in times of natural disaster (about once a year there, alas) they would take the box of letters with them. The kids cherish them.

muthaluvvintage
muthaluvvintage @whimsicalbeast She actually isn't a child. She is a young woman that I hired at my former job. She worked there to raise money to make her trip. I watched her work hard, give of herself and all with the sweetest disposition. I have to be honest, I am not a religious person but very spiritual. Her mission is religion based. I decided no matter her mission, it was for the good of humanity.

muthaluvvintage
muthaluvvintage @whimsicalbeast I don't have to believe the same way she does in order to help her. She runs a small school in the middle of nowhere in an old house. I grew up going to "church". Even though I don't do that now I still believe in being a good human and a lot of my beliefs and morals are based on my upbringing. Whatever she teaches those girls will help build a foundation to grow and be good women. Many of them are orphans.

muthaluvvintage
muthaluvvintage @whimsicalbeast So I actually feel like I am helping an entire village of little girls that otherwise would have lives that would go untouched by love and understanding. I give monthly and I also send special gifts during the year. They love arts and crafts. She has to order everything online so I use my credit card for everything and donate the Amazon dollars to her. Jessica is an amazing role model for these girls. And for me....
