Rare 1942 Form of Maritime Commission Eagle Award, Gilded Gold Bronze, Red, and Blue Enamel, SHIPS FOR VICTORY Badge, Signed.
Measuring 1 1/8" x 7/8" with a secure C-clasp.
This original WWII period pin badge is constructed of gold gilded metal and handpainted red and blue enamel.
The "V for Victory" American Eagle is featured, with a naval anchor and a "SHIPS FOR VICTORY" scroll.
Signed on reverse ~ "Des. Pat. 131446", "A.E. Co. Utica N.Y." (American Emblem Company), and "IBCWU" (Interstate Brass and Copper Workers Union).
Design Patent 131,446, the “Maritime Eagle,” was granted on 17 February 1942 to Mark O'Dea as a “Design for a Badge or Similar Article.” Soon thereafter, it was unveiled with the motto “Ships for Victory” and became the wartime insignia of the American Merchant Marine. The U. S. Maritime Commission tapped into this design by inventing the “Ships for Victory" insignia – the center of which was the “Maritime Eagle"
The United States of America 'Ships for Victory' were awarded to individuals who demonstrated exceptional service while building Victory and Liberty ships during WW2.
