Vintage Williamsburg Pottery Salt Glazed Stoneware Mug/Stein - Cobalt Blue and Light Gray This is an exquisite heavy piece of traditional Williamsburg folk pottery. The off-white and cobalt blue mug features a leaf pattern design. The smooth blue gloss finish is beautiful. This technique of salt glazing was discovered by Dutch potters using old salty herring barrels to fuel their kilns. Salt glazing produces an unusually strong textured finish. True to tradition, the background of the pottery mug is from the color of the clay. The cobalt blue color of the design work is used as it is one of only a few colors that can withstand the high temperatures used in the production of the piece. Measures 5.5" x 5" (including handle).
