tvdefrancesco @thaodola ETSY is a good one but HH Perkins is adding a page called Perkins Showcase where customers can list handmade items to sell. They sell a lot of Nantucket Basket supplies.

mosspark Wow! What a gem! Worth ever dollar. That's a piece of Americana....American History right there. I'd never want to part with it myself!

memilews
memilews 19th and 20th century scrimshaw crafted before 1989 (elephant) or before 1973 (sperm whale ivory, walrus ivory etc.) is legal. It is prohibited after those years for commercial import in the U.S. under the Marine Mammel Protection Act. I would check out when this was from before you do something illegal.

thaodola
thaodola @memilews Thank you for advice.

ntuckit
ntuckit Pretty sure this is from the 70’s or 80’s. I have one that is a little bigger by the same artist, Sayle. He made it for my mother and I inherited it. Same whale. They are very valuable bags and your pricing is about right based on how that size looks. Mine is from 1970.

jane4 @ganda2010 I have this bag exactly and bought it at a crafts fair
Sep 06Reply
karenentzi
karenentzi @thaodola this is an absurd price ! These were around in the 60’s and 70’s. Even though made in New England, they didn’t cost this much !! They sold more like $300.- $400.
Sep 08Reply

mcleodth
mcleodth Do you know what the ivory kind is? I know this basket maker, very reputable.
Oct 01Reply
thaodola
thaodola @mcleodth No, I do not know. You are correct. Mr. Sayle is well known to make Nantucket basket purses
Oct 01Reply
frerichsmary
frerichsmary @karenentzi no this is not an absurd price. You could never find this for $300-$400 dollars unless it’s a cheap, manufactured knock off….
Oct 14Reply
littlepete1
littlepete1 @karenentzi well known basket weavers in Nantucket who have perfected their craft can go for $10,000. This is not an absurd price
Oct 22Reply
thaodola
thaodola @littlepete1 I agree. These are highly collectible. I think when this art is no longer made, they will increase in value, especially if they are in good condition. All my three are in very good condition.
Oct 22Reply
marcyklein56
marcyklein56 @katemunroderv they are all over Etsy usually for 300.00
Oct 22Reply
thaodola
thaodola @marcyklein56 Not all Nantucket purses are genuine. There are fake ones that are $300/$400.
Oct 22Reply
thaodola
thaodola The person who made the basket is what makes it valuable.
Oct 22Reply
thaodola
thaodola Craftsmanship also very important
Oct 22Reply
littlepete1
littlepete1 @thaodola I took a basket weaving class! It was so much fun!!
Oct 23Reply
shekirk7
shekirk7 @karenentzi sorry, but William Sayle is from Nantucket and makes a very, fine woven bag. His work is highly sought from people who know the details of excellent woven Nantucket bags. There are many knock offs made in China but those in the know can spot them a mile away. The ivory whale alone is worth a few hundred dollars.
Oct 26Reply
shekirk7
shekirk7 @karenentzi yes, in the 60’s and 70’s but this is 2024. They have really appreciated. To get a new one might cost less these days but a vintage bag by William Sayle has gained in value. It’s a Nantucket thing. Original, handcrafted antiques are worth it to some.

Jan 17Reply
riodebbieo
riodebbieo @memilews exactly it’s probably Plastic. I have about four baskets and some of them are old and none of them are original scrimshaw.

abalboni1010 Could you confirm that the whale is original? It looks like it's re-glued on.
Apr 20Reply
thaodola
thaodola @abalboni1010 The whale was intact when I purchased purse. I have not used purse (been in dust bag), so the whale has been intact since I purchased it. The purse is in excellent condition for its age. I am selling because I do not use it.
