Sheffield Silver of Brooklyn, NY, was a highly regarded manufacturer of quality silver plated holloware. They were so popular that they were bought out by Reed & Barton in 1971. This great platter pre-dates the buy-out by probably at least a decade, if not more. This lovely platter is in the traditional tree motif, which allows the juice or gravy to run down the bottom of the plate into the juice well. The gadroon edging has just enough tarnish left to enhance the beautiful pattern. Maker's mark identifies Sheffield, with the number 1926 stamped on as well. Every family should have one of these, it's useful in so many ways. Carve your Thanksgiving turkey on it, pile it high with bon bons, serve cupcakes at a birthday party, display wrapped wedding gifts; its uses are limited only by your imagination. Standard size: 17 1/4" x 13 1/4". Condition is consistent with several decades of use.
