Royal Doulton's Toby jugs are part of a long history of Toby jugs that began in the 1700s. The Toby jug became popular in pubs and taverns in 18th century England. Royal Doulton became the most prolific manufacturer of Toby jugs in the 20th century. The original "Toby" came from folklore, where "Toby Fillpot" was a drunkard whose body became clay in the ground. A potter then re-formed the clay into the stout man depicted in the jug. This mug/jug is "arriet. Harry Fenton designed the 'Arriet (Harriet) jug, which was produced in England between 1946 and 1960. She is a costermonger, or street trader, who sold her fruit & vegetable wares from a barrow. She is sometimes paired with her husband "Arry (Harry) These mugs/jugs came in different sizes.
