Vintage Reverse Carved Painted Grouse Capercaillie Bird on Tree Cufflink Tie Bar
Fun and unusual gentleman's set of cuff links and tie bar with the Western Capercaillie Wood Grouse bird depicted
For such a tiny medium, I think the artist did a great job!
I believe these to be from the 1950's but could be the 60's. I have seen cuff links with similar mechanism identified as Anson or Swank. Unmarked, so I don't know who made them. Could be from Europe or the UK as this bird lives there.
I spent some time looking at pics and even had some friends chime in to identify this lovely bird, also known as the German Auerhahn
Each Bird is a tad different than the other, differences not as noticeable in person as in the pics
The Capercaillie is a huge woodland grouse – the large black males are unmistakable. They spend a lot of time feeding on the ground, but may also be found in trees, eating shoots and buds. They breed in Scottish native pinewood, a rare and vulnerable habitat, and in commercial conifer tree plantations. The UK Capercaillie population has declined so rapidly that it is at very real risk of extinction (for the second time) and is a 'Red List' species. 80% of the UK’s capercaillie live in the Cairngorms National Park. A male capercaillie is one of nature’s most magnificent sights and unfortunately one that is perilously close to becoming a memory. The turkey-sized capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is one of Scotland’s most characteristic birds.
