Vintage Mid Century Modern San Marino Marmaca Drioli Italian Ceramic Pottery Abstract Fish Bottle
From 20thcenturyglass site:
A stunning Italian ceramic pottery liqueur bottle with highly textured Fat Lava style finish, known as Smalto Roccia (rock glaze). Has hand painted Effetto Lacca (enamel effect) fish scene. Several factories in the San Marino area of Italy produced ceramics in this style between the 1950's - 1980's. This particular bottle was made to store liqueur made by Drioli, who sold their liqueurs in thousands of different ceramic and glass bottles during the 1950's - 1970's. These bottles have since become very collectable. Marked to base "Exclusion, Drioli, Made in Italy". According to the excellent book Alla Moda - Italian Ceramics of the 1950's - 70's by Mark Hill, page 218, this marking indicates the bottle was made by the San Marino factory Marmaca. The same book shows other examples of these bottles on page 184. Marmaca was founded in the 1940's by Luigi Masi, Filippo Martelli and Wilfredo Carli, the company name deriving from the first letters of their surnames. Marmaca was one of the first factories to produce ceramics in this style. The factory closed in 1964.
