I received this baby sock coin purse from my employer as part of a product launch when I worked at MacKenzie-Childs in Aurora, NY in 1996. I was employed as a furniture artisan, for which I was paid $6/hour to paint courtly checks, faux marble, tortoiseshell, and entire landscape paintings on pieces of furniture that sold for thousands of dollars. This little thing was called “La Chosette,” which is French for “little thing” and is a play on the French word for “sock” (la chaussette). I remember this very clearly because we were all forced to learn a song about La Chosette (to the tune of “Alouette”) and sing it for tour groups. I did not particularly enjoy my time there. One time Victoria made us march in a parade on the weekend, and one of my co-workers had to walk down the main street wearing a carrot costume. It was considered a privilege to be asked to work as catering staff for one of Victoria and Richard’s house parties. Good times. So please do me a favor and take this charming little souvenir off my hands. You can carry your loose change around in it, or hang it up as an ornament. I don’t suggest using it as a sock.
