Bamboo makes a charming vase, but solid bamboo is often not practical in some countries outside of Japan where the vases originate because of climate, so vases may be lined with porcelain or ceramic. About the art form: Shanghai Handicrafts are a rich traditional Chinese art that became available in American markets starting as trade between the two countries opened in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Each piece is hand-woven from wicker. Carved wood, stitching, and eyes bring the character to these pieces. High quality examples of Shanghai Handicrafts artisan work are exceedingly rare to find on the open market and some of the pieces that are for sale here are the only examples of their work available. These pieces are impossible to date accurately, but were made from 1930-1980 based on their tags and styles. Some still bear the red tag on the bottom. About the style: Wicker has continued to grow in popularity as a design trend for the last several years, seeing a revival in popularity as the 2020s begin. It recalls a vintage, bohemian, eco organic, warm atmosphere.
