This is a beautiful framed woodblock print by Japanese artist Tokuriki Tomikichiro featuring a serene night scene in Kyoto and titled "The Willow tree at the Gate of Shimabara". This print is November from the series “Twelve Months of Kyoto" and depicts a willow tree at the large gate of Shimabara. This was the main gate for the designated courtesans' district (yūkaku) in Kyoto, from 1640-1958, and later also a geisha district (hanamachi). This district is now defunct as an area for courtesans and geishas but continues to operate as a tourist area.
The artwork is set in a rich brown wooden frame. The frame has a few scratches, but overall VERY good condition for its age. I believe this is from a set created in
1950.
The print is perfect for collectors of vintage Asian art, with its unique design and historical significance. It would make a great addition to any collection or a standalone piece for display in any room. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own this exquisite piece of Japanese art history.
