This beauty’s a bit of a mystery. Vintage wall plaque: clay sculpture in shallow relief mounted on an oval board. Likely Indian, circa 1950s - 70s (based on the mounting—the sculpture could be older). It features a female musician holding a two-headed drum, likely Dholak, which is the most commonly played musical instrument in Northern India. She is likely an Apsara, a celestial maiden depicted in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. The lines and details are just beautiful. Measures 12.5” tall x 7” wide. Fitted with hanging hook in back.
There are various signs of age and use, including wear on the wood like fiberboard mount, a cracked area (see last photo), and wear on the black coating through which the natural clay is showing. Can certainly be painted, but I think the worn surface adds character and dimension.
