A pair of offset lithographs titled Gay Philosopher and Philosopher’s Wife by Henry Major. Major is a contemporary American painter and caricaturist. Considered an enigma, Major exhibited in the New York area in the 1940s including The Corcoran Gallery Biennial and on Davenports. This art is thought to be a self depiction, and originally titled the Philosopher. Although little is known, Major is described as having a twinkle in his eye and soft spoken, possibly living in an art colony near Provincetown Cape until the late 1940s.
This print is called, "The Philosopher's Wife" by Henry Major. Henry Major exhibited his work at galleries in New York and Pennsylvania, and also traveled around the country doing caricatures of famous people. Henry Major did work for Brown and Bigelow, a company that makes promotional items for businesses such as calendars. People believe the "Philosopher" was a caricature of himself.
