Helen Noel Shagam was born in 1912. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1934. During the Depression, Shagam was a WPA artist, working in charcoal, pastel, lithography, and printmaking. She graduated to ceramics in the 1960s and was a potter for 30 years. Shagam exhibited at the Artist Members Exhibition with the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in 1966. Later, she taught pottery making at her studio. Shagam died in 1989
