Vintage Hand-Painted Russian Lacquered Box Depicting the Snow Maiden and Rabbits

This hand-painted Russian lacquered box was in the museum shop at The Dragon Dreams Museum in Chattanooga, TN, which closed permanently in 2016. I have just recently purchased the contents. The box is in very good condition. There is fine age-related crazing of the lacquer that is hard to capture in a photo. See the last photo taken at 5x magnification. Russian lacquer art developed from the art of icon painting which came to an end with the collapse of Imperial Russia. The icon painters, needing a way to make a living, developed the craft of papier-mache decorative boxes. The artists lacquered and hand painted them, often with scenes from tales such as St. George and the Dragon.
