These coins feature on one side, Haile Selassie bust and year 1936 of the Ethiopian calendar in Ge'ez script (digits 10, 9, 100, 30, 6).
Haile Selassie was crowned Emperor on November 2, 1930 with the titles "King of Kings", "Lord of Lords", "Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah", "Elect of God". He took his regnal name - Haile Selassie, which translates to "Power of the Trinity".

The Lion of Judah is the symbol of the Hebrew tribe of Judah. According to the Torah, the tribe consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. The association between the Judah and the Lion, can first be found in the blessing given by Jacob to his son Judah in the Book of Genesis.
