Vintage CDV Cards Set of 3

• This set features three vintage / antique CDV cards circa mid-late 1800’s. • A carte de visite (CDV) is a small, card-mounted photograph, roughly the size of a modern business card, that was popular in the mid-19th century. • The three gentlemen featured in these particular CDV cards have some historical significance. The cards are in excellent condition with some fading and age spots. • William Ewart Gladstone was a British statesman and Liberal politician. In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, serving over 12 years. • Herbert John Gladstone was the youngest son of William Ewart Gladstone. He served as Secretary from 1905 to 1910 and Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1914. He was responsible for the Workman's Compensation Act, a Factory and Workshops Act, and in 1908 the eight hour working day underground in the Coal Mines Regulation Act. • Scottish missionary David Livingstone was the most famous explorer of his age, renowned for his efforts to eradicate the slave trade through legitimate commerce and Christianity. He went to South Africa as a missionary in 1840 and undertook the epic journey from Cape Town through west central Africa from 1852-56. • A great addition to your ephemera collection! • Please let me know if you have any questions.
