Made in the USA, this gorgeous black derby/church hat is 100% wool & adorned with gold lace & ribbon. Stamped on the inside of the hat is its maker #, or WPL, 4384. ➡️ I reached out to the manufacturer & received a confirmation of age and maker (see email response in photos) from one of the 3 founder’s family members, Ashley Fichthorn. “WPL numbers were issued between 1941 & 1959 under the Wool Products Labeling Act. The number will be WPL followed by 5 digits. The numbers issued were 00101 to 13669. Following the adoption of the Wool Act, Fur Act, & the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act in 1959, the numbering stopped and restarted again at 13670. They were later replaced by RN numbers. It is considered that an average of 2635 numbers were issued per year.” “Samuel E. Fichthorn, Daniel E. Fichthorn & Ambrose Marburger were the founders of the F&M Hat Company. Incorporated in Denver, Pennsylvania in 1912, they were a pioneer in harnessing steam power for wool felt hat manufacturing.” Hat is in excellent, like new, pre-loved condition.
