This is a beautiful 1920s - 1930s black crepe silk, five-crested paulownia Kurotomesode kimono. Traditionally worn by the mother of the bride as well as the groom, Kurotomesode are of the highest formality for a married woman.
The phoenix and foliage motif along the hem was done in calming shades of gradient blues, coral, and cream using the yuzen dye technique. The design was then selectively embroidered and hand painted using gold silk thread and metallic silver and gold paints. The floor sweeping silhouette is lined in white silk.
The paulownia (kiri) crest (kamon) and phoenix are often pictured together. Since ancient times the paulownia tree has been highly valued as the place where the mythical phoenix bird comes to roost.
The kiri-mon (crest) takes the shape of the leaves and flowers of the paulownia tree, and was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularily the empress.
