Vintage iconic Bear and ornate open bale - both very large. This is truly a statement making piece with its intricate and detailed 2 tone etching in relief and beautiful etched bale with a copper bear claw. The body of the bear is of hollow form design. Stamped STERLING and with an etched icon representing the artist’s hallmark. Bear measures 2-1/4 x 1-1/2”; the ample bale measures 1-1/2 x 5/8”. Weight is over 20g. (it tipped my small scale; I apologize for not being able to be more accurate.) Nice vintage pre-owned condition with patina consistent of a piece of its era, estimated to be from the 60’s.

Is there proof of authenticity of this being Native made? Do you know what tribe? Thanks.

@carrielampert Hi Carrie, tx for your interest. The artist's hallmark on the back would indicate Native American. Although I wasn't able to identify the name of the artist, the style speaks of Navajo design.
Hollow form means that it is designed with a hollow interior. LMK if you have any other questions, and I'll do my best to answer them.
Love your leopard app 🐴

@tantemoonbeam Hi, thanks so much for the info. Can see a B or part of a B on back or an N as in Nazzi (Ben Nazzi) he used horizontal arrows and sometimes just a B. I really like this a lot. I am concerned about how much erosion there is that is not removable. Its a fair price I think. Is there any pitting in the silver from erosion? We had at one time 20 horses then as we got older (now 72) I kept my 2 leopards. 1 blue roan, 1 red roan leopard. Beauties! Now none, miss terrible! :-)

@carrielampert tku for the helpful info on Ben Nazzie. I'm going to say without confirming this that pitting is nonexistent on this piece, only tarnish. I will double check that when I get to the studio and will get back to you to confirm. It's so difficult to be without horses, I know that and feel for you. Although I continue to ride, it's been 13 years since I've owned my own, hard to believe, and feels so empty.

@tantemoonbeam thanks for checking, it is a very beautiful piece and price is good. Will seriously consider, wanted smaller for neck but its not overly large as some I have seen. I have been thinking of buying or leasing a new friend but its sure isn't the same as going out at midnight to talk to them and make sure they are OK. Hear them neighing when i"m coming towards the corral.

@carrielampert His work is lovely After you mentioned Benson Nazzie, I went back and looked at some of the Navajo pieces that I had sold and there was a lovely mosaic bracelet and roadrunner pin from the 60s from Taos. Wonderful workmanship. The bear looks to be one of his more recent pieces, yes indeed it is in very good shape with minor tarnishing only.
Leasing is a good way to go 🐴 - more affordable and you can still build a bond; nothing however replaces having your own. As you know.

Hi thanks again for everything. I think I will pass on this only because of size. For the necklace I'm having made its just too big for me. I love it and if it was a bit smaller I would buy it. Its really gorgeous! If you happen to run across anything we have talked about but smaller in size, let me know. I am taking my time to make sure I get what I want. God's blessings and Happy Trails!
