Here is a beautiful, lengthy, sterling 925 silver ring w/a large turquoise cabochon, surrounded by leaves & maybe berries? My sister bought this ring in the 1990s.
*Sterling stamp & trademark "Circle J.W.", photo 2
*Size 7, photo 5
*Ring length 1.25", photo 6
*Turquoise has a visible crack, in addition to the spot which may or may not be natural, I just don't know. Despite the crack, it is extremely secure in setting & won't fall out on you. The other thing to know is the band is lopsided, see photo 14. It is not visible when on, however, and is very sturdy.
The "Circle J.W." trademark was first used in 1988 according to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), and was canceled in 2002.
From an online article: "Circle JW’s Jack Whittaker works with Navajo jewelers to create beautiful silver rings, earrings, necklaces, cuff bracelets and pendants inlaid with turquoise, spiny oyster, sugilite, gaspeite, lapis, onyx and many other gemstones."
People are not wrong when they say J.W. stands for Jack Whittaker, but I believe the correct spelling is probably Whittiker. This is the name filed w/the AZ Corporation Commission for the business (see photo 15, an ad that appeared in a 1984 Texas Monthly) as well as what's listed in trade show entries (example in last photo).
I think most people just copy information they find in other listings, hence the cycle repeats! :)
