EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1953 - JUNGLELAND SOUVENIR PROGRAM
- World Jungle Compound - Thousand Oaks California
Jungleland was basically the zoo for Hollywood. It housed many of the animals used in movies between the 1930s and 1960s. As you drove up the coast, past the town of Thousand Oaks, you could literally see elephants and occasionally other animals on the side of the road advertising the zoo.
The MGM Lion "Leo" lived here...For four decades, about 1,800 elephants, tigers, hippos, giraffes, camels, llamas, chimpanzees and other exotic animals roamed the once wide-open space now occupied by the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. When they weren''t entertaining the public, the animals were featured in hundreds of movies, including "Tarzan," "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and "Dr. Doolittle."
Famed lion tamer, Mabel Stark came to Thousand Oaks in 1938. She was probably the world's first woman tiger and lion trainer.
