VHS San Francisco Clark Gable Jeanette MacDonald
Jeanette MacDonald persuaded a skeptical Clark Gable to star opposite her in the 1936 production of San Francisco. As an additional attraction, Spencer Tracy was cast as the sparring priest, Father Mullin. The result was a sensational drama of love and corruption, spiced with terrific musical numbers, and culminating in one of the most extraordinary disaster sequences in a motion-picture history: the Earthquake of 1906.
Blackie Norton (Gable), "King of the Barbary Coast," is proprietor of the riotous "Paradise Saloon, "Into his den of high-flying lowlife walks Mary Blake (MacDonald), looking to pursue a singing career. After "eye-balling" her legs and hearing her "pipes," Norton hires Mary- but soon their professional relationship segues into a romantic one.
The New York Times hailed San Francisco as "prodigally generous and completely satisfying." Indeed, when MacDonald sings the film's seductive hit number, "Would You?" and the rousing title song, you'll understand just why the critics raved.
