The Commandant's Letter of Commendation Ribbon (CGCLC) is presented to any member of the United States Coast Guard who received a Commandant's Commendation Letter. Created in 1979 by Admiral John B. Hayes the award is retroactive to August 12th, 1921, the date of the first letter issued by Admiral William E. Reynolds. Additional awards are represented by wearing a 5/16th inch Gold Star device on the service ribbon. An Operational "O" device is approved under certain circumstances.
