This unique and stunning vintage toque (A toque is small cap or bonnet having a narrow brim or no brim at all. Toques were popular from the 13th to the 16th century in Europe, especially France. The mode was revived in the 1930s.) consists of a rounded hard structure covered in what seems to be embroidered olive green and orange yarn in a most unique patter, as seen in the photos. At one side of the front, there are 2 green and 1 orange pom-poms attached by a large gold metal safety. Quite impressive!
Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves. Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble.
