'This is a small jewel of a hat from the 1950's. The hat is like a hair bun cover in that is is like a small inverted bowl made of a stif material. The outside is covered with black velvet, then with black veiling. The inside is covered with black fabric. One of the. most outstanding feature of this hat are the black feather "birds", as seen in the photos. To keep the hat in place there are two small, dark orange combs attached.
Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves. Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble.
