When and where I grew up these types of beads were always around...they were HIGHLY plentiful. I grew up in Berkele,California and they were sold on the streets especially on Telegraph Ave to U.C.Berkeley students. They were also sold in a store called Bedazzled (which is still around on some states) and also in some cultural shops where they would sell all types of unusual items and boutiques! (We were very" spoiled" in Northern California)I think, from the 60's on up to the 90's)!!

P.S.These days I see these types of beads mostly at bead shows or gem and mineral shows that also sell beads!! Sometimes I will see them at flea markets or antique shows in Maryland or other states nearby.

@rubies4me Thank you for sharing that beautiful imagery. There was a time when I would visit the markets if West Africa and see what you saw - beads piled on tables! But now you can only find them at dealers shops!
