The tradition of the Venetian Carnival Mask started in the 13th century when Venetians would hold celebrations and parties from December 26th until the start of Lent and wear elaborate masks to conceal their identity. These parties were the only time when the lower and upper classes mingled together. Imagine the shenanigans that ensued. These masks are certainly not from the 13th century, but they are hand-crafted from papier-mache and hand-painted in the traditional manner.
The Plague Doctor, with his long bird-like nose, is a late-comer to the party, not originating until the 17th century. As its name suggests, this type of mask was worn by plague doctors to keep them from breathing in airborne diseases. Over time it was embraced by Carnival goers with a nod to their own mortality. This particular specimen is blue and cream with raised gold scrolling. He also sports two snippets of sheet music on either side of his face. His ribbon ties are blue.
