The Trial of Old Drum (2000), directed by Sean McNamara, is a heartfelt and spirited drama based on a true story. Set in the late 19th century, the film follows a young boy named Charlie (played by Bobby Edner), who is faced with a difficult decision when his beloved dog, Drum, is accused of killing sheep on his family's farm. The situation becomes even more complicated when Charlie's own Uncle Lon (played by John Schuck) joins in the accusations, claiming that Drum is a bloodthirsty monster.
In the midst of this turmoil, Charlie’s steadfast belief in his loyal dog leads him to question whether the truth will be enough to save Drum. With the advice of his mother’s close friend Ann (played by Alexis O'Keefe), Charlie tries to stay hopeful, knowing that the truth will prevail—but he’s unsure whether the legal system will allow it. As the case goes to court, Drum’s defense becomes a battle not just to save a dog, but to prove the deep, unconditional bond between Charlie and his dog, a bond that helped fill the void left by Charlie’s mother’s death years earlier.
Starring Ron Perlman, Randy Travis, Scott Bakula, and a strong supporting cast, The Trial of Old Drum is an inspiring story about loyalty, love, and the lengths we go to protect the ones we care about. With themes of justice, faith, and courage, this film touches the heart and celebrates the enduring spirit of friendship between a boy and his dog.
