Hotei, in Japanese mythology, one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (“Seven Gods of Luck”). This popular figure is depicted frequently in contemporary crafts as a cheerful, contented Buddhist monk with a large exposed belly, often accompanied by children.
This figurine features five babies (four boys and one girl) with beautifully hand-painted faces and colorful clothing.
Hotei is the god of happiness, laughter, and the wisdom of contentment, and he is the patron of the weak and children, fortunetellers, and bartenders.
The bottom of the statue is painted in red with the following statement: "All hand made in China Art History". Also, there's a number "12" embossed into the porcelain. There is also a "4", or it's possibly Chinese writing, in black paint. This statue is at least 50 years old but I don't know its origin, except that it was formerly owned by a family member who collected Asian art. My research indicates this piece possibly dates to around 1910-1920 but more likely 1940s.
It's very colorful, with pretty hues of yellow, pink, blue, purple. That it's covered with babies and Hotei is laughing speaks to its meaning: happiness and contentment.
No chips, cracks or dents. Perfect condition. Smoke-free and pet-free home. Would make a great house-warming gift!
