The **Golden Hind** was a galleon captained by Sir Francis Drake during his circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. The ship was originally named **Pelican**, but Drake renamed it mid-voyage in 1578 in honor of his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a golden hind (a female red deer). The ship was built in 1577 and weighed about 120 tons. The ship was armed with 22 guns and had a complement of 80-85 men.
