Steve Fabrikant was born in Brazil to a family who ran a ready to wear firm. He studied archetecture but soon returned to the family firm. In 1984 he struck out on his own with a partner in New York. Knits with sleek designs like this piece -- with eye catching accents -- were his specialty early on. His pieces were soon sold in high end department stores like Nieman's and smaller specialty dress shops around the world. The pieces were co-branded with the store label below the Fabrikant label. In this case the store is Montaldo's an east coast-based company that dated from 1919 to 1995 with retail outlets in smaller markets like Richmond, Winston Salem, Cincinatti, Denver. St. Louis and other cities.
