New in box, never used. From the Museum of Modern Art. Few artists have been more passionately fond of cats than Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (French, 1859-1923), a Swiss-born graphic artist who lived in Paris. He drew cats throughout his long career, particularly those from his Montmartre neighborhood. Their antics are illustrated in the artist's most famous book, Des chats: images sans paroles (Cats: Pictures without Words), ca. 1898, a copy of which is in the Museum's collection. The charming images on our porcelain salt and pepper shakers are adapted from Des chats. Gift of Mrs. Edward C. Moèn, I96I (61.687.12) Hand wash only
