Laura Bush was First Lady of the United States from 2001 to 2009. She founded both the National Book Festival and the Texas Book Festival.
Some may too quickly discount the appeal of this book based on their own political point of view or their opinion of Mrs. Bush's spouse. Her grace, and her uncommon willingness to bare her heart make this story revelatory, beautifully rendered, and unlike any other first lady's memoir ever written.
The content of this book is full of substance and deserves to be read. For example, Mrs. Bush discusses, in great detail, her adolescent experience as the driver at fault in a fatal car accident, including her regrets and what she learned from the experience. She also describes life in the White House and her experience on September 11 2001 in such a manner as to make the reader feel like a fly on the wall during those difficult times. She also writes about issues such as literacy with passion and concern. Her account of being the spouse of the leader of the free world is told without any partisan bent (she reminds she is "Republican by marriage") using the common touch of someone talking about the work of their spouse who had an interesting job.
