This collection includes a 90% silver Washington "2 Bits" Quarter (issued 1932-1964) as well as a $1 Silver Certificate (last issued in the series of 1957) that was originally backed by the $1 in silver at U.S. Treasury. Both the coin and bank note feature portraits of George Washington. In early American history, Spanish silver coins circulated as U.S. legal tender- including the 2 reales silver coin (known as "2 bits") and 8 reales silver dollar. When the U.S. Mint was established in 1792, Congress based the size and silver content of the U.S. silver quarter and silver dollar on the Spanish silver coins. Since the quarter was equal in value to the 2 reales, it also became known as "two bits." The circulated currency set comes packaged in a vinlyl folio (7.25" x 4") along with a certificate of authenticity.
