sterling is normally marked sterling on flatware, there are no stamps saying sterling?

Generally this is true. But some older gold & silver pieces are not marked.

@sunshine487 I make jewelry out of flatware and have yet to come across any old enough to be unmarked. have you tested them to know they are sterling?
