leesees_pieces Scrimshaw is the style of the carving when it is carved in either ivory, whaletooth, whalebone or shells.. After it is carved (or sketched), permanent colored dye (typically black) is rubbed into the carvings. This type of art began in the early 19th century. Just a little FYI for you. Makes us appreciate.
