THE ARTIST: New Zealand born artist, Rynne Tanton, originally studied to be a teacher in the 1960s, choosing art as one of his electives. He was sadly disappointed to learn only mainstreams form of fine art were offered in New Zealand at the time, so embarked upon teaching himself some pottery. Seeking more formal qualifications, he completed a three year degree at Royal Melbourne Institute of technology, and was about to return to New Zealand when he was offered a job at the Launceston Art School. This immense passion for passing on the age old knowledge of ceramics saw him stay on in Launceston for 24 years. In the mid 2000's, Tanton and Bernadine Atling established "Crickhollow Pottery" just outside of Launceston, pouring his passion into each individually hand made piece and inspired by the natural beauty of Tasmania.
