First, local Peruvian artisans copied the Spanish techniques, styles and themes but later they developed their own designs. Reverse-glass painting is a technique whereby an image is essentially built up on a sheet of glass in reverse order: final details are painted first, background is added last, and the finished artwork is then viewed from its unpainted side. It is a skill that requires great care and precision, as the visual surface is painted first then layered over.
